Why choose a Core 2 Duo processor for your computer to your new high end?

It has been difficult for Intel to watch AMD's Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 and FX pretty much take over the performance PC market, putting the giant once-untouchable chip in a position where his only response was to reduce price competition.
