Configuring an Authoritative Time Server on a Windows 2000 Server
The operating system Windows Server 2000 includes a service time synchronization or time called w32time Windows. The service is installed by default and runs continuously in the list of services. The service time required by Kerberos authentication protocol to ensure that all computers running a Windows 2000 environment using a common time shared. This article describes how to install and configure an authoritative time server in a Windows Server 2000. It also discusses the hierarchical relationship at the heart of the service and provides Tips and Tricks Panel.
Windows Time Synchronization Hierarchy The Windows Time service 2000 uses a hierarchical structure sync: items workstations and servers shall designate their domain controller as a time source; domain controllers specify the PDC as a source of time synchronization, but can also use a parent domain controller, PDC follow the hierarchy of domains in the selection of their source of time synchronization.
In the hierarchy the PDC emulator in the forest root domain is the main reference time for the organization. The PDC in the root domain forest may have its internal reference clock is controlled in a number of ways:
- Using its own internal clock system Hardware
- By synchronizing on an internet NTP time server.
- By synchronizing with a local intranet based NTP time server or a clock Hardware Reference.
- Using a hardware reference clock.
Each of these synchronization methods described above raises a number of issues.
A PDC using its own internal clock sync hardware system will drift over time, transactions can not be referenced to a source tracking time.
A PDC sync on a web server NTP time can get the exact time. However, this raises security issues since the NTP port in the firewall must be left open for synchronization. In addition, Internet NTP servers can provide authentication, so that the source of time can not be guaranteed.
Many of the questions above can be solved aa synchronizing a PDC with a local intranet based NTP time server or hardware clock. A local NTP server or hardware clock has the advantage of providing a traceable time reference and also secure authentication.
Windows 2000 Configuration Service Time.
Configuring the Windows 2000 Time is done by editing registry entries. It is strongly recommended that the register is argued before the implementation of changes. This helps to restore the registry in case of erroneous modification.
To configure the PDC master to use its internal system clock requires only that the W32Time registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services W32Time Config AnnounceFlags is set to A. This makes the PDC announce itself as a reliable time source. However, the system clock can drift over time and is not referenced to a source of accurate time. Additionally, Windows Time periodic warnings of system event log indicating that the PDC must be configured to synchronize with an external time source. This warning can be ignored.
To configure the PDC to synchronize with a external time reference, a number of registry entries must be changed. The parameters of time windows service registry are stored in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services W32Time Parameters .
The type, reliable and local time source parameters NTP must be set to 1. The NTP server setting must be set to a space delimited list of peers that the NTP server computer is to synchronize. The MaxAllowedClockErrInSecs indicates the maximum number of seconds between the time and time received, that the time of receipt must be considered a new period of validity. The Period parameter indicates how often the time service is synchronizing.
After registry entries have been correctly modified, the Windows Time service must be stopped and restarted. At a command prompt enter net stop w32time & & net start w32time to restart the service.
Tips and tricks.
The proper operation of Windows Time service depends heavily the smooth operation of network devices and infrastructure. common problems such as TCP / IP connectivity, DNS resolution, such references inaccurate NTP time and network delay may cause problems with the synchronization service. Furthermore, when syncing to an Internet server NTP ensure Does the USP port 123 is open on the firewall. UDP port 123 is reserved for NTP communication packets.
