Dell Latitude D620 Laptop Review

The Dell Latitude D620 laptop is a widescreen 14-inch business equipped with the latest processor Intel Core Duo. The D620 replaces the D610 and provides a full overhaul in the design change and internal components. The new look gray industrial charcoal and black D620 expresses its strong build, which Dell calls "Road Ready" and with lots of available built-in wireless communications this notebook is road ready in more a title.

Design and Build

The D620 is the most interesting in that it adopts widescreen format, a feature that the date of this note has really been pushed more into the channel of consumption of laptops. Dell believes that business-types prefer this format too well. After all, a large screen (available in WXGA and WXGA + resolution) does allow you to more easily have two windows open next to each other simultaneously. Side-by-side comparison of documents, Web pages or spreadsheets is an example of common business tasks done more easily on a wide screen.

Aesthetically the D620 looks nice and professional. It is mostly a dark charcoal gray (almost black) the interior with silver accents and silver cover. This provides an industrial activity and muscular look, quite the opposite of gray and white design of the line of Dell Inspiron laptops. All new Latitude laptops (D420, D620 and Dell Latitude D800 battery) to bring this new game colors, in my opinion, it is personalized and professional looking - it's not exactly stylish and elegant as Apple or Sony, the Latitude promotes deep grooves and visible, as opposed to an Apple smooth all look, but the look works. And it's certainly an improvement over the former aspect D610 which was boring and too typical business with its gray appearance and square.

The industrial design for research are consistent with the actual construction of the laptop. The D620 is very robust, it uses a case all magnesium alloy. It follows in strong overall physical protection of the laptop, without worrying about cracks appearing cases or problems with excessive flexing. The hinges are steel Dell says they have been tested for a maximum of 20,000 cycles (openings and closings) to assure freedom from loosening and wobble. The D620 also passes a new barrel design to withstand vibration better than past Latitude notebooks. Another moving part on the D620 is the screen lock, is also constructed of metal for durability and good looks to boot.

This most importantly, to protect in a laptop is in most cases, the hard drive (where all your data is stored), data are often irreplaceable and precious, while the hardware is not quite. As such Dell has implemented StrikeZone technology that reduces the amount of shock experienced in hard drive during a fall situation. You can also get hard disk shock resistant 60 GB and 80 GB capacity which also offer physical protection data.

The D620 weighs about 5.6 pounds with 6-cell battery, optical drive installed and the power cord and adapter. Given that this notebook is a magnesium alloy case and not too much plastic is used, the weight is pretty impressive. This is not the lighter thin and lightweight, making an effort, and it is thicker than the ThinkPad T series notebooks for example, but it's still comfortable enough to carry in a backpack that is without feeling the weight too.

Keyboard and touchpad

One of the most important parts a laptop is of course the ease of entry, aka how easy it is to type and move the cursor on the screen. The keyboard D620 is full, it is nice and firm with no flex and overall very pleasant to use. The D620 is offered with a WXGA (1280 x 800) or WXGA + (1440 x 900) display. The WXGA + screen will give you about 26% more real estate. As mentioned earlier, Dell takes the widescreen format with the thinking that allows users to view companies more easily windows document side by side. The widescreen format also offers a low profile on the whole, what is good for in tight spaces like an airplane, and actually means the notebooks footprint is about 2% less overall.

The D620 has an ambient light sensor integrated into a tool for controlling the brightness of the screen when the Dell laptop battery. For example, in a dark room dark screen that less light is needed to see the screen, but in full screen will light up the brightness making it easier to see. When the power of the screen will automatically become brighter. You can override the ambient light sensor for you control the brightness of course.

Regarding the quality of the screen, the brightness is correct, but certainly not the best on the market and not nearly as strong as some of the high-end screens for consumer notebooks. This is a screen mat so you do not get any reflection of office lighting. There is a backlight leakage from the bottom and the picture is slightly washed out. Wireless

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IrDA are all things that we saw in the past with the D610 of course, the addition of broadband communications to the cellular D620 is new and well received. Dell offers the ability to configure your D620 with an internal antenna for either EVDO or HSDPA, depending on where you live and cellular provider you have. I like the fact that there are no ugly antenna side or additional bumps on the notebook where the antenna came out like almost every other WWAN equipped notebook uses (such as the ThinkPad T60 or Sony VAIO TX). Rather, Dell puts the antenna in the screen and the D620 has the same appearance as do or do not have the option WWAN.
